The Game of Thrones universe keeps expanding with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Set during a pivotal era for Westeros's future, the series premieres on HBO in January 2026.
It is based on George R.R. Martin's novella, The Hedge Knight, the first installment in his Tales of Dunk and Egg fantasy series. The plot revolves around events nearly 100 years before Game of Thrones, and when the Targaryens were still on the Throne of Westeros.
Loyalty, honour, and identity will be examined in the context of tournament and inter-house politics in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While the memory of dragons is fading, the impact of royal legacy remains intact. Thus, the series will introduce new elements, both in tone and storyline, to offer an alternative perspective on the lore established in Game of Thrones.
Exact release date for the Game of Thrones prequel - A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and how many episodes will there be in the series
The first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be available on HBO on January 18, 2026, with each new episode released weekly, adhering to the HBO release format. The first season will comprise six episodes, making it shorter than both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
George R.R. Martin, in his blog article dated October 10, 2024, stated that the series will be a much tighter story, with more focus and a more character-driven narrative, than either of his previous projects. Even though the series is smaller than either Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, it still fits within the canon of Westeros and relies heavily upon the established lore.
"THE HEDGE KNIGHT will be a lot shorter than GAME OF THRONES or HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, with a much different tone… but it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe," he wrote.Where to watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? Streaming details and more

What to expect from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
A still from the series (Image via Instagram/@gameofthrones)A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms tells the tale of Ser Duncan the Tall, a noble knight from humble beginnings. He is joined by his young squire, Egg, who is actually from the Targaryen bloodline. Dunk, though from humble beginnings, tries to maintain his dignity and defend Egg, whose royal status has to be kept secret so that he does not become vulnerable.
Set shortly after the Blackfyre Rebellion, this period is marked by social unrest due to political friction, division among the upper, middle, and lower classes, and ongoing conflicts between competing dynasties. Featuring guest spots by major noble houses and knights, the season builds on the familial and political battles of this time period while mixing lighter moments with the majesty and danger typical in the world of Game of Thrones.
Martin, in his blog, also stated that if the upcoming series performs well, then the adaptations of the second and third novellas, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight, about Dunk and Egg, will follow.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on January 18, 2025, only on HBO.
