No player in the history of the Philadelphia 76ers has worn the number that rookie VJ Edgecombe plans to don.
The 76ers announced Edgecombe's choice on Thursday afternoon, less than 24 hours after they made the Baylor star the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Edgecombe's jersey number: 77.
He wore No. 7 in college with the Bears.
The 76ers currently have No. 7 potentially occupied by Kyle Lowry if the veteran returns for 2025-26.
Edgecombe wore No. 1 in high school at Long Island Lutheran. That was Andre Drummond's number this past season for the 76ers.
Drummond has a player option, while Lowry is on the open market but expressed an interest in returning.

The No. 77 is a rare NBA number in general, with one exception.
Superstar Luka Doncic, formerly of the Mavericks and now with the Lakers, wears 77.
Doncic was also the No. 3 pick in his draft.
Maybe that's a good sign?
If Edgecombe turns out even a bit like Doncic, the 76ers will be thrilled.
And there's probably a good one-liner about a guy wearing 77 for the 76ers, so you can all work on that.
