In the fast-paced world of WWE, creative directions can change as quickly as a referee’s count. While 2025 delivered some high-octane moments, it also saw several promising storylines and character shifts hit a brick wall. From shocking heel turns that evaporated to championship reigns that left fans scratching their heads, not every big decision stuck the landing.
Here are five WWE decisions in 2025 that ultimately led to absolutely nothing.
#5. Jey Uso winning the World Heavyweight Championship
The Yeet movement reached its fever pitch at WrestleMania 41, where Jey Uso finally ascended the mountain to capture his first World Heavyweight Championship. However, the honeymoon phase was short-lived. Critics quickly pointed out that Jey’s solo moveset struggled to carry twenty-minute main events, and his promo material began to feel repetitive without a strong antagonist.
After a lackluster 70-day reign, Jey dropped the title and drifted into the mid-card. By the end of the year, WWE hit the reset button, reuniting him with Jimmy Uso and booking them to win the World Tag Team Championship on the final RAW of 2025.
While fans love The Usos, Jey’s much-hyped singles main event status felt like it was sacrificed just to bolster the tag division again.
#4. Jacob Fatu’s premature WWE United States Title loss
When Jacob Fatu captured the United States Championship, he looked like an unstoppable force destined for a date with the Undisputed WWE Champion. Instead, his reign was used as a mere prop in a feud with Solo Sikoa and his crew.
The Samoan Werewolf dropped the title to Sikoa in a move that many felt was lateral for both men. Fatu was then relegated to enforcer duties for MFT before a legitimate non-wrestling injury sidelined him in October. A powerhouse who should have been 2025’s breakout main eventer ended the year on the shelf with zero momentum.
#3. Lyra Valkyria's Women’s Intercontinental Championship loss
The introduction of the Women’s Intercontinental Championship was supposed to mark the beginning of the Lyra Valkyria era. After winning the title, Lyra was positioned as the workhorse of the division. However, the prestige of the gold took a hit when she was booked into a never-ending cycle of tag team matches alongside Bayley.
Rather than defending her title against rising NXT call-ups or established veterans, Valkyria’s reign became secondary to her friendship with The Role Model. When she eventually lost the gold, the 29-year-old star didn't move up to the world title scene as expected. Instead, she simply became a permanent fixture in the tag team division, leaving fans wondering about the motive behind her solo push.
#2. Bayley’s split personality promos
Midway through 2025, WWE began airing haunting, highly produced vignettes featuring Bayley arguing with her past selves: The Hugger and the Damage CTRL leader. It hinted at a deep, psychological character shift akin to Mick Foley’s Three Faces of Foley.
The WWE Universe was hooked, but the payoff never arrived. After weeks of teasers, the voices in her head were rarely mentioned in her actual matches. By the time Survivor Series rolled around, The Role Model was back to her standard babyface persona with no explanation for the mental breakdown storyline, making the months of cinematic promos feel like a massive waste of airtime.
#1. John Cena’s heel turn
At Elimination Chamber 2025, the unthinkable happened: John Cena turned heel. By aligning with The Rock and selling his soul to The Final Boss, Cena broke the internet. It was the most significant character shift in two decades and was supposed to define his retirement tour.
However, the execution was baffling. The Franchise Player had several high-profile Hollywood heel moments, but the Authority storyline eventually fizzled out when The Rock went back to filming movies. Just a few months later, John Cena appeared on SmackDown, hugged a fan, and started doing the "You Can’t See Me" hand gesture again as if the betrayal never happened.
The greatest heel turn of the modern era was essentially deleted from continuity by winter.
