The San Francisco 49ers should unquestionably be trying to multitask in early June.
In addition to continuing to search for a logical suitor for disgruntled wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (or simply releasing him), the franchise should be looking to pair Nick Bosa with a star-studded pass-rushing partner ahead of the 2026-27 season.
San Francisco finished last in the NFL in sacks last year (20), which is unacceptable for a franchise aiming to regularly compete for Super Bowls.
The 49ers would shore up their pass-rush in a new trade pitch from Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay, as they would send three draft picks (2027 first and three-round picks combined with a 2028 third-round pick) to the Las Vegas Raiders for a star edge rusher who’s recorded 69.5 sacks in his career thus far.
“With Myles Garrett off the market following his blockbuster trade to the Los Angeles Rams, teams still hoping to deal for a game-changing edge rusher should set their sights on Maxx Crosby,” Kay wrote Wednesday.
“Crosby has been back with the Las Vegas Raiders after a trade to the Baltimore Ravens fell through back in March. While the edge defender and team have both maintained that he's happy to continue his career in Sin City, it may not be long before another deal materializes.”
“An organization like the San Francisco 49ers, who appear to be a piece or two away from making yet another Super Bowl run, could offer a first-round pick plus additional compensation for Crosby. He may not net Vegas another set of first-rounders after failing Baltimore's physical, but some Day 2 picks could be enough to get the Raiders to move on from Crosby for a second time this offseason.”
Crosby’s situation in Las Vegas is fascinating, to say the least. The Eastern Michigan product nearly joined the Ravens earlier this offseason, but health concerns prompted Baltimore to back out of the deal at the last second.
Many analysts don’t believe the Raiders will be in a rush to trade Crosby, for real, following their failed deal with the Ravens. Still, the compensation listed in Kay’s hypothetical 49ers trade idea could accelerate the trade process.
Crosby is a generational talent, as his strategic pass-rushing methods help him torch opponents in one-on-one matchups and shift momentum into the Raiders’ favor. The 28-year-old finished this past season with 73 tackles, 10 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 15 contests.
Pursuing Crosby feels like a must for the 49ers at this point.
