The San Francisco 49ers made a major offseason splash, signing Mike Evans to a three-year contract that gives Brock Purdy a new number-one target.
However, the 49ers could still add to the wide receiver room this offseason. Jauan Jennings, Kendrick Bourne, and Brandon Aiyuk are all going to be off the roster. Ricky Pearsall and Evans aren't enough, especially with George Kittle coming off injury.
With that in mind, PFF.com's Dalton Wasserman named Indiana Hoosiers 13-touchdown wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. as the 49ers' "perfect" 2026 NFL Draft target.
Omar Cooper Jr. named 'perfect' 49ers draft target
"... so the 49ers still need to find a way to improve after the catch," Wasserman writes. "One player who improved mightily after the catch in 2025 was Indiana's Omar Cooper Jr. A move to the slot facilitated better opportunities for Cooper, who racked up 494 yards after the catch in 2025, the 16th most in the FBS."
The 49ers need to add more pass-catching ability, and with the addition of Evans, a receiver who's not as great after the catch, there is a weak spot in the offense that's become clear.
Adding playmakers who can extend plays and run after the catch is a big need for the 49ers this offseason.
If they want to add such a player and choose to do so in the NFL Draft, then Cooper would be a great option for Kyle Shanahan's offense.

The Junior wide receiver is coming off a strong season for the National Champion Indiana Hoosiers. He played in 16 games and put up some incredible numbers.
Cooper had 69 receptions in 2025 for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns to go with 74 yards rushing and a touchdown on three attempts.
Wasserman notes that Cooper forced 27 missed tackles last year, which ranks fourth in the nation, and among 2026 NFL Draft prospects at wide receiver, it was the most.
Cooper is a high-upside receiver who would make for a great addition to the 49ers offense after they added Evans this offseason in free agency.
Giving Purdy a full supporting cast of receivers is important. Evans, Pearsall, and Cooper, along with Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, would make for a very strong supporting cast for Purdy in 2026, in what might be one of the last of this iteration of the 49ers.
