49ers make season-ending Brandon Aiyuk roster move ahead of Week 15

The San Francisco 49ers have dealt with absences from George Kittle, Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, and Brock Purdy at times this season. It's been an injury-riddled season, and the most noteworthy of all hasn't once played this season.

Brandon Aiyuk, recovering from an injury he sustained in 2024, has yet to return for the 49ers this season. Ahead of Week 15, it doesn't look like anything is changing with Aiyuk anytime soon.

Things changed with the latest 49ers roster move. After weeks of questions, Adam Schefter of ESPN shared a report on the 49ers that will officially end Aiyuk's 2025 season, and likely, his 49ers career.

Roster move likely ends Brandon Aiyuk's 49ers career

"49ers placed WR Brandon Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list," Schefter reports, "Making him ineligible to return this season and raising questions about where he'll be next season."

This roster move from the 49ers comes after weeks of speculation due to a report about his 2026 contract guarantees being waived by the team. Aiyuk didn't challenge it, paving the way for the 49ers to cut or trade him after this season.

While Schefter doesn't outright say that Aiyuk is going to be on a new team, after the 2025 season Aiyuk and the 49ers have had, a resolution between the two sides seems unlikely.

San Francisco is likely to let Aiyuk leave after 2025, as the two sides have seen their relationship break apart this season, as the star receiver recovered from a brutal injury during the 2024 season.

The 49ers made this roster move, placing Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list, to officially end his 2025 season and likely put an end to his tenure in San Francisco.

Aiyuk's future in the NFL will be one to watch, but after the 49ers spent a huge sum on him one offseason ago, he's likely to be on a new team for the 2026 season. The only question left is which team will take a chance on Aiyuk.
