The 49ers got the better of the Broncos on Sunday, remaining undefeated through four games. It's easy to feel confident at 4-0, and LB Dre Greenlaw was brimming with confidence after the win.

Greenlaw attempted to confront Broncos coach Sean Payton on the field as the two teams converged, and his message was caught on camera before teammates ushered him away.

After the game, Greenlaw explained why he tried to confront Payton.

Here's a look at the incident between the two and Greenlaw's history with the Broncos coach.

Dre Greenlaw-Sean Payton confrontation

Cameras appeared to capture Greenlaw telling Payton to "get the f— off my field" at the end of Sunday's game, words Greenlaw later confirmed to reporters.

"I told him to get the f— off the field. That’s it. ‘Get the f— off the field," Greenlaw said after the win.

Fred Warner quickly ushered Greenlaw away from Payton, preventing the interaction from becoming something more significant, and Payton went on to shake Kyle Shanahan's hand in a customary postgame meeting.

Greenlaw also appeared to jaw with Payton during the game:

Despite the unusual interaction, Payton told reporters after the game that he is "all good" with Greenlaw and had high praise for the linebacker after the two spent 2025 together in Denver.

"I think the world of him. I love everything about him," Payton said. "He plays with that emotion and so, all good."

Greenlaw has a much different view of his time with Payton and the Broncos, it turns out. Here's what he had to say about his experience with the Super Bowl-winning coach.

When did Dre Greenlaw play for Sean Payton?

Greenlaw spent the 2025 season with the Broncos after a torn Achilles kept him off the field for most of 2024 in San Francisco. Greenlaw only played in eight games, starting seven, and he was released in the offseason after Denver brought back LBs Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad.

According to Greenlaw, Payton started ignoring him during the second half of the 2025 season.

"He would walk by, I would walk by, and he wouldn't even look at me because of my injury," Greenlaw told reporters Sunday. The veteran linebacker also said Payton didn't speak to him personally when he was released in March, saying he felt "disrespect" having to hear the news from his agent.

Dre Greenlaw did not hold back when talking about his relationship with Sean Payton. Greenlaw told @Eric_Branch his agent informed him of the Broncos releasing him in March: "(Payton) couldn’t be man to man and call my phone and say, ‘We’re going to cut you.’” https://t.co/bMMZxDknFq

Payton took the high road during Sunday's postgame press conference, but it doesn't appear there will ever be a reunion between the two.
