The Patriots got their biggest win of their season on Sunday, storming back from a fourth-quarter deficit to down the Bills away from home, 34-30.
Predictably, New England head coach Mike Vrabel was at the heart of the mayhem. He drew up a fairly impressive game script against Josh Allen-led side, providing a platform for Drake Maye to put forth his best outing of the year.
Vrabel also drew the ire of the refereeing crew at the end of the second half, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct call that helped bring about Buffalo points.
He didn't feel the punishment fit the crime. Here's what you need to know.

Mike Vrabel calls out 'sensitive' ref after being hit with unsportsmanlike conduct
Vrabel didn't mince words on his view of his unsportsmanlike call, criticizing the referee who found him to be out of order. The Patriots coach explained that he chirped at the ref after feeling hard-done by a call. Per Vrabel, the official didn't take too kindly to his assessment.

— Mark Daniels (@ByMarkDaniels) October 4, 2026"I told him it was a terrible f— call," Vrabel told reporters postgame. "I've said that 87 times since I've been a head coach. It was nothing derogatory. You'd have to ask him. I think he was a little sensitive.
"I probably shouldn't have swore but, I can tell you that in my history of being on the sidelines as a head coach, I've said that."
The penalty proved immediately costly to New England, moving the Bills 10 yards closer to the end zone while resetting the downs. Buffalo would find pay dirt three plays later, with Josh Allen creeping over the goal-line from short-range to level the score at 14.

— Zack Cox (@zm_cox) October 4, 2026Vrabel appeared to be vindicated for his actions when head referee Bill Vinovich's pool report was made public after the game ended. When asked what led to the unsportsmanlike being assessed, Vinovich said it was because he came "out of the box", went up to an official and said the defensive holding call made on third-and-goal was "a terrible f— call."

Ultimately, Vrabel's error proved fairly inconsequential to the final result. Maye and Efton Chism's late-game heroics were enough to deliver a much-needed win in the Patriots' ranks in Week 4. Still, Vrabel will hope that fairly benign comments like the one he uttered on Sunday afternoon won't leave him susceptible to additional flags in the weeks to come.
