South African all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy stunned the Indian team and their fans with a brilliant century on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test in Guwahati. After the hosts were in pole position to start the day, the 31-year-old defied all odds with his 206-ball 109.
While his primary skill with the left-arm spin-bowling will be in action over the remainder of the Test, several Indian fans have already begun whispering Muthusamy's name as a possible fit for their IPL franchises. With the rare ability to offer quality spin-bowling and lower-order batting, the veteran could find several attractors in next month's mini auction.
Muthusamy's century in the ongoing Indian clash is no fluke as he averages an incredible 55.42 in Tests, with two other half-centuries. He also boasts an excellent T20 record with the ball, averaging under 22 at an economy of 6.56 in 93 outings.
With the franchises looking to beef up their rosters heading into next season, here are three teams that should target Senuran Muthusamy in the IPL 2026 auction.
#1 CSK
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have never worried about the all-rounder cum left-arm spinner role for years with Ravindra Jadeja's towering presence. However, with the champion cricketer traded away to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Sanju Samson, the five-time champions are in unfamiliar territory.
From boasting a plethora of spinners, they are looking for a second bona fide spinner to Noor Ahmad and a potential replacement for the seemingly irreplaceable Jadeja. While Senuran Muthusamy is no Jadeja in terms of pedigree or experience, his current form across formats makes him the ideal fit in CSK's lower middle-order.
The slower and lower surfaces in Chepauk Stadium should only enhance the franchise's appeal to the South African all-rounder. With Muthusamy's price likely to be as low as it may ever be for an IPL auction, CSK should pounce at the opportunity of landing the in-form all-rounder as they look to bounce back from an embarrassing bottom-placed finish last season.
#2 SRH
The SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) endured a torrid IPL 2025 season, a year after mixing entertainment and production to perfection in their runners-up finish in 2024. Yet, in both seasons, the Orange Army were often found wanting on surfaces favoring spin and batters with the ability to cope with two-paced tracks.
Having released two quality spinners in Adam Zampa and Rahul Chahar, SRH should be among the favorites to go for Senuran Muthusamy. Furthermore, the side's batting at No. 6 and 7 has been unreliable the last couple of years, and the South African could also help massively in that role.
With all-out attack being their calling card across the board, batting or bowling, SRH could use a more defensive bowler in Muthusamy to bring a more balanced approach to their ranks.
#3 PBKS
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) were one of the few teams that had almost all the bases covered last season. Yet, by finishing second and missing capturing their maiden IPL silverware by a whisker, the franchise will look to iron out even the most minor of issues.
One such may be the absence of a recognized overseas spin-bowling all-rounder to complement their series of foreign pace-bowling all-rounders. While Yuzvendra Chahal and Harpreet Brar make for an excellent spin-bowling duo, PBKS could use a spinner at No.7 or 8 instead of Azmatullah Omarzai or Marcus Stoinis on some of the slower and lower tracks around the country.
The bigger boundaries at Mohali will also work in favor of Senuran Muthusamy, making PBKS an ideal destination for the 31-year-old to ply his trade in the IPL.
