Sergio Perez's name has been doing the rounds for a while when it comes to making a call on who could potentially be driving a Cadillac in 2025. The American brand is making its way to the sport, and preparations have been underway already.
Unfortunately for Cadillac, the brand comes with a lot of question marks. We have no idea about the level of preparations that have already been done. We do not know how things would slowly start taking shape at the time they join the grid.
A lot of stuff is still in the dark when it comes to Cadillac. With that being said, there are a few positives as well that should not be ignored. The biggest of them is Andretti Global's association, which makes the squad a resource-rich entity, and hence that area would not be a struggle. It is a project that would start from the back of the midfield with hopes of having a steep learning curve.
Whether that learning curve helps the team become a championship contender is a long-term project, but for now, Cadillac is looking for the driver with which it can kickstart the F1 journey.
Heading into 2026 and looking at the current landscape, Sergio Perez is one of the more viable candidates for Cadillac, and the American brand should be hoping to secure him for the future.
#1 2025 has mended Sergio Perez's reputation
The 2025 F1 season has surely been one where Sergio Perez looks at Red Bull and the second seat and feels vindicated. The Austrian team put Liam Lawson in as the Mexican's replacement, and within a couple of races, he was dropped.
Lawson has been replaced by Yuki Tsunoda, who has also had a hard time trying to find that sweet spot with the car. You look at the level at which the two young drivers are performing compared to Max Verstappen, and you see how Sergio Perez did in the same situation, it's not much different, and one could even argue that the Mexican was maybe a tad better.
When Sergio Perez was fired last season by Red Bull, it was not a good look in any way. His stock had plummeted to an all-time low.
However, the way two different drivers have struggled in the second seat, it has become apparent that the driver was not the problem behind those results.
#2 Experience of being at Red Bull and his midfield proficiency
Sergio Perez cut his teeth and proved his mettle by spending countless years in the midfield, scoring big points and bagging the occasional podium. If a team wants to build things from the ground up, then the Mexican is a perfect addition.
To add to this, Sergio Perez was a part of Red Bull from 2021 to 2024, a period where the team won 4 drivers' championships and 2 constructors' championships. There's a lot of learning and culture that passes down when you're part of such an environment, and Perez would have learned a lot from that. Going into a team like Cadillac, that's where he can impart his knowledge and help the team improve.
#3 Signing him opens up the vast Mexican market
Finally, one cannot ignore the commercial aspect of signing Sergio Perez and opening up a massive Mexican market. Perez, alongside professional boxer Canelo, is one of the most famous sports personalities in the country, and bringing him on board is going to give Cadillac a major commercial boost.
For a team that's still making its way to the sport and would be trying to find its feet in the early stages of its stint, having a driver that comes with decent financial backing can only be looked at as a positive.
