Veteran running backs for Broncos to consider if J.K. Dobbins deal is off the table

13 hours ago 3

The Denver Broncos looked ready to sign free-agent running back J.K. Dobbins earlier this week, bringing him in for a visit that consisted of more than one day and dinner with the team. Yet, no deal has been made.

While there is still a chance the Broncos will bring Dobbins in at a later date, the team may want to look at other options. The fact that Dobbins was brought in for a visit indicates the team is looking for more experience in a backfield that figures to be led by rookie RJ Harvey, second-year running back Audric Estime, and Jaleel McLaughlin, a former undrafted player entering his third year in the league.

It's a bit of a surprise that a deal wasn't completed with Dobbins, but something led to a snag in the negotiations. Here are some other options for the Broncos to consider taking a look at.

Veteran running back options for Broncos to consider

Jeff Wilson

Undrafted out of North Texas in 2018, Jeff Wilson has put together a seven-year career with the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins.

His career has been quiet since being traded to Miami in 2022 but he has over 500 NFL rushing attempts and could be the missing piece to this group to bring it all together.

Gus Edwards

Gus Edwards recently turned 30 years old and was released this offseason after just one year with the Los Angeles Chargers. The Broncos have Estime for short-yardage and goal-line situations, but Edwards could help in that department as well as he has much more experience.

Edwards' best game last season came against the Broncos, where he rushed for 68 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Nick Chubb

Nick Chubb is probably the biggest name still available at the running back position, but he does appear to be a shell of his former self after seeing his numbers drop drastically last season.

Once one of the most promising running backs in the league, injuries have taken their toll on Chubb and a team would just be seeing if there is anything at all left by signing him at this point.

Can the Broncos get a deal done with Dobbins?

If these are the best names that are out there, it points to the fact that the best player available would be Dobbins.

Though injuries have put a major dent in Dobbins' career, he is still only 26 years old and was effective for the Chargers last season, rushing for over 900 yards despite missing four games later in the year.

Dobbins would be an experienced option to pair with the young Harvey as the team's primary combination, but it remains to be seen if the two sides can reach an agreement. If not, the Broncos will have to settle for an option like the ones listed above or just go into the season with what they have.
