John Cena lost to Gunther in his retirement match at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event. However, what's shocking is that the 17-time WWE Champion lost by tapping out. In the last 21 years, Cena had not tapped out to any supersar. The fans were left teary-eyed when their Champ finally gave up.

It wasn't even a one-sided contest as both superstars gave their best. While Gunther used nearly all of his moves to pin Cena, including the Powerbombs and Frog Spalshes, the Final Testament Player also delivered multiple Attitude Adjustments to win the bout. Cena even survived two Sleeper Locks of Gunther before tapping out in the final one.

However, the ending of this match left a bitter taste in the mouths of the fans. As a result, the fans were booing WWE Chief Content Officer, Triple H, when he came out along with other superstars to pay final respect to Cena.

Here are three reasons why John Cena tapping out to The Ring General in his last match will go down as a huge mistake.

#3 Goes against John Cena's 'Never Give Up' catchphrase

In his entire WWE career, John Cena has lived up to his motto of 'Never Give Up'. However, he slipped on his own message and gave up in his last match. The last time he tapped out was in 2004 at No Way Out to Kurt Angle. In fact, he has tapped out to only three superstars in WWE: Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle and Late Chris Benoit.

After that, the hero John Cena was born in 2005, who never gave up. In his last match, WWE messed up everything. To have the 17-time WWE Champion tap out to a two-time World Heavyweight Champion wasn't a wise booking. It leaves a not-so-good memory of Cena's final match in WWE.

#2 WWE could have booked John Cena to pass out

There were speculations that John Cena could lose to Gunther and pass the torch to him. Cena has lost to superstars ike Austin Theory, Solo Sikoa, and Roman Reigns, to put them over. However, things went downhill in the last match.

WWE seemingly made a terrible booking by getting The Champ to tap out. Even if the company wanted Cena to lose, it could have been done by making him pass out. Many superstars in the past have lost their matches to Gunther by passing out. For example, LA Knight lost the finals of The Last Time is Now tournament by passing out. Goldberg lost his retirement match to Gunther when he passed out.

It could have been done the same with Cena. By making him tap out, the company has earned the wrath of Cena's loyal fans. The promotion may face the consequences of this booking in the future.

#1 John Cena could have also booked to win

There was no harm in booking John Cena to win against a heel Gunther. The Final Testament Player could have been allowed to end things on a high note, with a big win over the Austrian Scion. Since there were already rumours of Gunther winning this bout, booking Cena for a win would have certainly excited the fans.

Multiple babyface superstars like CM Punk and Cody Rhodes could also have been involved in the match's finish, with heels like Solo Sikoa or Bron Breakker causing outside intervention. That would have given a decent finish also to the match, unlike the stale finish which the fans got.

The Leader of Cenation has always put the company's business over his own ambitions. He has lost many matches because the company wanted him to. In his last contest, WWE could have given a thought to Cena's sacrifices and booked him to win.
