The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped their second game of the season against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night at Scotiabank Arena. The Leafs rallied to tie the game, but lost on an overtime goal by Adam Fantilli.
Fantilli scored twice for the Blue Jackets, with Dmitri Vorokov getting the other tally. Meanwhile, Dakota Mermis got his first goal as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, with John Tavares scoring the equalizer early in the third period.
Joseph Woll had another strong outing for the Maple Leafs, making 27 of 30 saves in his third start this season.
So, here’s a look at the three least impressive Toronto Maple Leafs from their overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night.
3 least impressive Toronto Maple Leafs from OT loss to Columbus Blue Jackets
#3 Matias Maccellli
Matias Maccelli was, unfortunately, mostly a non-factor for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night. He hit the ice for a little over 12 minutes across 18 shifts. He got one shot on goal.
Maccelli missed an opportunity to send Scott Laughton on a breakaway in overtime after he picked up a rebound in front of his net. The Blue Jackets would later score to win the game.
#2 Morgan Rielly
Morgan Rielly was a workhorse as usual. He hit the ice for nearly 25 minutes on the night across 32 shifts. He got one shot on goal and three blocks. But it was his role in the Blue Jackets’ second goal that put the Toronto Maple Leafs behind the eight-ball.
Here’s a look at the play as shown on the Blue Jackets’ official X channel:
The Blue Jackets burned Rielly on the zone entry, allowing Fantilli to pick up the puck and put a sick move on Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The goal put the Blue Jackets up 2-0 at the time. Had the Leafs prevented that goal, the outcome could have been much different on the night.
#1 Max Domi
Max Domi had another pedestrian game. He hit the ice for over 16 minutes, across 22 shifts. He managed one shot on goal.
But it was his defensive miscue in overtime that ended up costing the Maple Leafs the game. Check it out:
Domi was caught on a 2-on-1 after William Nylander missed a shot on the Blue Jackets’ net. Domi was woefully unable to defend against Fantilli, who carved him up like a Christmas turkey. The costly miscue allowed Columbus to skate away with the extra point.
The Maple Leafs will hit the ice once again on Saturday night as they take on the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
