Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has refused to be drawn on comments from Liverpool boss Arne Slot on squad depth. Guardiola gave a hilarious response when quizzed about Slot’s remarks.

Liverpool’s poor run of form continued on Wednesday as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup following a 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield. After the match, Slot claimed his squad lacked depth compared to Manchester City and Chelsea despite Liverpool’s summer spending spree that saw them broke the British transfer record for the most expensive player. Slot told reporters:

“Before I went out, I saw City’s lineup and I don’t think they had one starter from the weekend, but it felt as if you look at their lineup they played with their 11 starters. So maybe it also gives a little bit of insight—everybody has always said how big of a squad we have. “When we played Chelsea, I said they are missing eight but they can still bring Estevao in. We are only missing four players at the moment and already we needed to start with four players under the age of 19 and after I made two substitutions we were on six."

Speaking in a press conference on Friday ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League match with Bournemouth, Guardiola was asked about Slot’s comments about City having greater squad depth, to which he responded:

“You will not have my headlines in the Daily Mail, I'm sorry. You will not have it..."

Ahead of Gameweek 10, City are fifth while the Reds are seventh in the Premier League table.

“Maybe ourselves and Liverpool” – Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on smaller teams contending with Premier League traditional ‘Big Six’ for top four

Pep Guardiola insists he is less surprised that teams like Sunderland and Bournemouth are currently in the top four in the Premier League table. He suggested that Liverpool and his Manchester City side ‘changed that dynamic.’

Newly promoted side Sunderland have taken the league by storm, amassing 17 points from their first nine league games. They are one point ahead of City and five points adrift of league leaders Arsenal. Similarly, Bournemouth have suddenly appeared as a dark horse as they currently sit second in the standings.

On the league’s traditional top six changing, Guardiola said:

“I remember when I was in (Bayern) Munich or Barcelona, I always heard that in England, everyone could beat everyone, I always had that sense. Maybe Liverpool and ourselves in the past changed that dynamic because we were so consistent in terms of points and arriving every season with 90, 90, 90 points, close to 100 points. But, I think the Premier League has always been like this. “At some point like NBA, there is not a dominant team in the last four or five or six years, there is always one different team and everyone can beat everyone. I think for the spectator and for the show of the Premier League, it is really, really good."

Interestingly, Manchester City will take on Bournemouth in their next league fixture on Sunday, November 2.
