Tom Cruise is booked and busy with the promo cycle for his new film "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning," and he recently made an unlikely stop for one of his appearances.
Visiting the "Pat McAfee Show," the "Top Gun" actor sat down for lively discussion on his new movie, which included interesting insight into how he was able to help bring the film industry back to life after COVID. "During COVID, when they thought the movie industry was going to be dead...did you take that upon yourself? Did you take that weight of the industry?," McAfee asked Cruise, who responded: "Yeah I did because...look...my friends...the difference between me and movies is that I've never felt competitive with other people," Cruise responded.
He continued: "I want everyone to do well, so yeah, I did. When everything got shutdown, I had to take it on." The actor noted that he went on to work with different governments to begin the process. "I called one studio, and I was 'You guys shootin'?' and he was like 'No, No, No...we're all shut down.' And I was like, 'Oh wow, we're shooting our movies!' And they were like 'What?!'"
"I called back a week later and was like 'How's it goin'? 'Cause we're coming out next summer. We're on this date...I hope you're not on this date!'" After that, Cruise called back his studio he was working with. "I said...'Look all these guys are making movies! We gotta make movies!' and I just kept everyone working throughout, so it was like we had to finish "Top Gun: Maverick" in post during COVID, and everybody was always going 'Oh you can't do this, you can't do that.'"
"And I was going 'Ehh...I don't take no for an answer very well, there's got to be a solution."
And there, indeed, wound up being a solution. I guess Tom Cruise really did save the day.
