Yemen take on Bhutan in neutral Kuwait on Tuesday for their clash in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, aiming to remain hot on the heels of group leaders Lebanon. With eight points in four games, the Gulf nation are in second place, trailing their Middle Eastern rivals by two points with only two fixtures remaining, including against Lebanon themselves in March next year.
Yemen's ambitions of making their second Asian Cup appearance would dissipate if they fail to win their upcoming qualifying fixture. However, a big victory in their last game will give them scope for optimism.
The Gulf side crushed Brunei 9-0, powered by a sensational five-goal salvo from Nasser Al-Gahwashi as Yemen registered their joint biggest victory in history. They had also beaten the southeast minnows 2-0 on the road a few days earlier.
Having drawn their earlier two games, Yemen winning their next two appears to have bolstered their progression hopes. Wins in their last two fixtures would surely seal their berth at the Saudi Arabian showpiece.
Bhutan are currently at the bottom of the Group B standings with just one point in the bag, which came courtesy of a 0-0 draw with Yemen on matchday one. Since then, the Dragons lost 2-1 to Brunei before a pair of 2-0 and 4-0 losses to Lebanon last month.
Ranked 189th in the world, Bhutan's dream of making their debut at the Asian Cup lived on after getting eliminated from the race. But with two more fixtures remaining, they'll be hoping to salvage some pride by getting a win across the board.
