Yankees trade idea sends two-time All-Star to Padres with one condition

With less than a month until pitchers and catchers report for spring training, the New York Yankees are looking to dump one significant salary.

It has been well-reported that the Yankees are hoping to rid themselves of the remainder of Marcus Stroman's $37 million contract, of which $18.5 million is left. They are even willing to eat a portion of that contract in a trade, according to The New York Post.

Considering Stroman is coming off a down season in his first campaign with the Yankees, it's not as if teams are lining up to acquire the former two-time All-Star.

However, in a mailbag article, Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors outlined some potential landing spots for Stroman — one of which was the San Diego Padres.

Dierkes believes there could be a potential deal there with the Padres "if they throw in a prospect, and the Yankees eat more salary than expected."

That first part would be intriguing to the Yankees, who need to replenish the farm system after years of trading away prospects.

However, the notion of the Yankees eating more of the salary than expected probably would stall negotiations. New York is trying to stay under the $301 million luxury tax threshold in 2025, and they have roughly $17-18 million to work with, according to Roster Resource.

Even if the Yankees landed a mid-level prospect in return for Stroman, it could go a long way in clearing some room to add a veteran infielder or bullpen arm to the current roster.
