The New York Yankees are trying to stay alive in the AL East rivalry matchup in the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays. But if they lose Game 2 Monday night, the offseason might be just around the corner.
For this Yankees team, there are some very interesting moves they could look to make. Upgrades in the outfield, at catcher, and at multiple infield spots are in play. Also, some reliever help couldn't hurt either. Selling isn't really a big thing for this team.
But Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report's trade idea for the Yankees with the Chicago White Sox would have New York selling, but in a deal that makes perfect sense for both the Yankees and the White Sox. The reason why? Both teams come out better afterwards.
Yankees trade idea with White Sox makes perfect sense for both teams
"New York Yankees send: RHP Luis Gil (arbitration eligible through 2028), LHP Ryan Weathers (arbitration eligible through 2028). Chicago White Sox send: SS/3B/CF Caleb Bonemer (Double-A Prospect; No. 27 overall on MLB pipeline), RHP Pierce George (Triple-A Prospect)," Miller proposed.
This would make for a very interesting offseason move for the Yankees and the White Sox. While Chicago is giving up a very valuable infield/outfield prospect, there's good reason to move on from such a player.
Their infield and outfield are mostly set, and their biggest need is in the starting rotation. They desperately need better pitchers next season, as this year's rotation is far from ideal.
Adding Weathers and Gil would make sense, but why would the Yankees trade both starters to the White Sox? Well, it's all thanks to the Yankees' stacked rotation.

Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, and Carlos Rodon make up the team's top-four starters. After them, they really only need two more starters: one for the fifth rotation spot and the other for depth.
They could keep Gil and Weathers in such a role, but with Will Warren, Clarke Schmidt, Elmer Rodriguez, and Carlos Lagrange all possible options, it's clear the Yankees have great pitching depth.
So, with both teams needing what the other has in abundance, this swap would make perfect sense for both the Yankees and White Sox.
It's obviously only a hypothetical trade, but this is the kind of trade that Brian Cashman should be looking to make this offseason. Whether it's these specific players or not, using the rotation for a trade would like how Miller proposed it would make perfect sense.
