Yankees' Spencer Jones given edge over George Lombard, Carlos Lagrange in specific way

The New York Yankees have a lot of promising prospects waiting to make their MLB debuts.

Among them are three guys currently at Triple-A: Spencer Jones, George Lombard Jr. and Carlos Lagrange.

ESPN's Kiley McDaniel released new prospect rankings for the Yankees' system on Friday, and all three feature.

The top-five goes Lombard, Elmer Rodriguez, Dax Kilby, Lagrange and Jones.

Rodriguez just made his MLB debut on Wednesday, and Kilby is in the lower minors.

That leads McDaniel to wonder which of the other three could get called up next. Jones has one thing working in his favor.

"Jones, Lombard and Lagrange could all be next, depending on what's needed, though Jones is on the 40-man, so he has an edge," McDaniel writes.

The 40-man roster does play a real role in decisions like this, particularly if unexpected injuries occur at the MLB level.

Most teams have full 40-man rosters most of the time, and so it's not always easy to just add a new guy onto it. Removing a different player from the 40 would need them to pass through waivers and potentially be claimed by another team.

The Yankees surely won't hold Lombard and Lagrange back too much once they seem ready, but the Yanks also won't rush them.

Jones, on the other hand, is the most likely to get his debut thanks to an injury in the major leagues. He could be called up with no potential waiving of a player needed.

The 6-foot-7 Jones has incredible raw power, and he bats left-handed, which always is exciting in Yankee Stadium. And he might just arrive sooner rather than later.
