Canucks' Filip Hronek sustains nasty-looking injury during IIHF play after opponent doesn't stop

The Vancouver Canucks have a long time until they play another hockey game.

But as they prepare for an important offseason, they do have some players competing elsewhere, including Filip Hronek representing Czechia in IIHF play.

And for Hronek, it hasn't been a great start to his international action. He was injured in his most recent game.

"I'm afraid it might be something more serious," the Czech head coach told reporters afterward while also expressing displeasure with how the injury happened.

The video of the injury is absolutely bizarre.

Hronek has been pushed to the ice by his opponent, but with a stick sort of caught in between, the opponent doesn't let up.

He keeps pushing and prodding and pulling while Hronek is already on the ground:

It was just an exhibition game, and Hronek's time representing his country this summer might already be in jeopardy.

The defenseman is coming off one of the better seasons put together for the Canucks in 2025-26. He finished with eight goals and 41 assists for 49 points while playing all 82 games.

This was likely an exciting chance for the 28-year old to represent his home after what was a rough Vancouver season. But instead, he's hurt now, and in a way that seemed absolutely unnecessary.
