With the MLB offseason in full swing, teams around the league are getting their business in order ahead of the winter meetings and what not that will lay out the rosters for the season to come. A part of this process is the qualifying offer, in which a team will extend a contract for a player they would like to retain, or not.
The latter of the two is how things went down between the New York Yankees and their second baseman, Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Chisholm to hit free agency
Bednar receives the qualifying offer while Chisholm does not. Joel Sherman was on it. We will discuss this and more on our Hot Stove Show at 6:30 pm on YES.
— JackCurryYES (@JackCurryYES) November 2, 2026As reported by YES's Jack Curry, the Yankees didn't offer a qualifying offer to Chisholm, which makes him one of the many players entering the free agency pool in the days to come.
The decision to not extend an offer for their second baseman comes after a shaky season in the Bronx for Chisholm, a year that saw him hit for a .231/.312/.399 slash line, with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs. While these might not sound abnormal off the bat, when looking at what he was producing in the seasons prior, it sticks out significantly given the reduction in his production from the batter's box.
With other big second basemen to hit the free agency market at the same time, including former three-time Batting Title winner Luis Arraez, as well as veteran Jeff McNeil, it's apparent that the Yankees front office could be looking to go in a different direction moving forward.
