Yankees sign Mexican League MVP with 1.025 OPS since 2021

It's been a long journey away from MLB-affiliated baseball for Nick Torres.

The 32-year old right-handed hitter last played for an affiliated team when he was in Triple-A of the Texas Rangers' organization in 2018.

He was originally a 2014 fourth-round pick by the San Diego Padres in 2014.

Torres has recently been starring in the Mexican League, where he was the 2025 MVP.

Since 2021 playing for Algodoneros Union Laguna, Torres has batted .343 with a 1.025 OPS.

The New York Yankees noticed. 

On Saturday, they signed Torres to a contract.

The Mexican League's pitching is at a much lower level than MLB, so it's not clear at all whether Torres will translate.

But the Yanks certainly thought he was worth taking a shot on.

Torres could at least serve as the short-side of a platoon, if he proves he can hit in the majors.

It's a cool story, if nothing else. Torres worked hard and has earned himself another chance.
