The New York Yankees are putting the final touches on their Opening Day roster.
Today is the last day of spring training, and they quietly placed right-hander Osvaldo Bido on waivers. The reliever was subsequently claimed by the Atlanta Braves.
Bido, 30, was claimed and designated for assignment by the Braves in December, lasting just 10 days with the NL East organization. The Yankees were his fifth club of the offseason.
The three-year veteran made his debut in 2023 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and spent the past two seasons as a swingman with the Athletics, making starts and appearances out of the bullpen.
New York had no space in its bullpen for Bido despite his 1.29 ERA in seven innings in spring training.
Bido joins Braves after Yankees stint
Atlanta placed left-hander Joey Wentz on the 60-day injured list on Tuesday after he suffered a torn ACL during spring training. Wentz's injury created an open 40-man roster spot for Bido.
Instead of Bido, the Yankees will rely on Rule 5 Draft pick Cade Winquest to work as a middle relief option during the opening weeks of the season. If Winquest hadn't made the Opening Day roster, New York would've been forced to offer him back to the St. Louis Cardinals.
In a surprising move, the Yankees will open their schedule with a four-man rotation, optioning the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year, Luis Gil, to Triple-A.
