Yankees-Rockies trade proposal sends $70 million All-Star third baseman to New York

The New York Yankees have an obvious need at third base despite having maybe the most well-rounded team.

At 45-32, the Yankees have a two-and-a-half game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the American League East.

New York has everything it needs except for a third baseman. Jazz Chisholm, Oswald Peraza and Oswaldo Cabrera have split time at third, but the Yankees need a real third baseman.

The Yankees have been linked to an All-Star corner infielder who is rumored to be moved at the trade deadline.

Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon would strengthen a strong Yankees lineup and shore up defensive issues.

McMahon, 30, isn’t having the offensive season that he had when he was an All-Star last year but has gotten hot since May.

McMahon has 12 home runs and 25 RBI while slashing just .222/.327/.410 in 76 games this season. 10 of his home runs and 21 of his RBI have come since May 1.

McMahon has the third-best range among third basemen, logging five Outs Above Average. He is second among third basemen with six Defensive Runs Saved.

Cole Shelton of Heavy.com proposed that the Yankees trade two top 10 prospects, Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and Henry Lalane, in exchange for McMahon.

“Colorado needs all the prospects it can get, and moving on from McMahon at the deadline seems likely,” wrote Shelton.

Rodriguez-Cruz is New York’s No. 6 prospect and is 5-2 with a 2.29 ERA in 12 appearances (11 starts) in A+ ball.

Lalane is New York’s No. 9 prospect, but he hasn’t pitched well this year. He is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in three starts in A ball.
