The New York Yankees are looking to make it back to the World Series, and could be looking for pitching upgrades to do so. They could look at the Colorado Rockies for potential help.
Kyle Freeland has spent his entire career with the Rockies. He signed a five-year, $64 million deal in 2022. He is not quite an ace, but he could be valuable to the Yankees alongside Max Fried and Luis Gil. Newsweek's Andrew Wright suggested that the Yankees could be a contender to trade for him.
"Assuming the Rockies make Freeland available at the trade deadline, the Yankees, (Cleveland) Guardians, (Los Angeles) Dodgers and (Milwaukee) Brewers are among the teams that could and should have interest in a move for the 31-year-old left-hander," wrote Wright.
The Rockies are 6-29 and could start unloading all of their valuable players near the trade deadline. Freeland could net the Rockies a prospect or two to build around. He has a 4.52 career ERA in 212 career outings, but Wright thinks that may not tell the story of how good he actually is.
"Freeland has done his time and paid his dues with the Rockies, as he's spent all nine seasons of his career in Colorado," wrote Wright. "It is time that he is rewarded and sent to a team that has a chance to make a deep postseason run.

"He is currently 0-4 with an ERA of 5.70, but a thing to remember is that he spends half his games pitching in the elevated air at Coors Field. That ERA is probably not a full telling of the season he is putting together."
He would be a cheaper addition than a true ace would be for the Yankees. The Yankees lost Gerrit Cole in the spring, but have not done much to replace him. Freeland would bring a starter the Yankees could trust besides Fried or Gil. He is under contract for 2026 and has a vesting option for 2027, so he would be more than a rental.
