Anthony Volpe underwent offseason surgery for a partially torn labrum during the offseason and did not make an appearance in spring training.
The New York Yankees shortstop is nearing a return to the field, however. And that may be good or bad news, depending on your opinion of the former first-round pick who has yet to blossom into the player the AL East organization thought he would.
Obviously, it's a positive update for Volpe, who probably wants to get back in the lineup as soon as possible.
"Aaron Boone tells us that Anthony Volpe will start live BP tomorrow and should begin a rehab assignment in two weeks," Talkin' Yanks announced on X on Tuesday.
Volpe's starting gig is currently filled by Jose Caballero, a speedster who has led the American League in stolen bases the past two seasons.
How Volpe's update impacts Caballero
Based on recent history, the Yankees will likely give Volpe the starting shortstop job back when he returns from his rehab. Caballero, acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays at last year's deadline, is proving he's worthy of competing for the spot.
Caballero has four hits in 15 trips to the plate thus far, stealing one base and driving in one run. Besides an error on opening night, he's played steady defense at the middle infield position.
Before last night's game against the Seattle Mariners, the 29-year-old hit .264 with 16 stolen bases and a .787 OPS in his first 43 games with the Yankees. Though it's a much larger sample size of 153 games, Volpe's .663 OPS in 2025 was his third consecutive season with an OPS of .666 or lower.
