This offseason, the New York Yankees are going to be looking at ways to improve their offense after a lackluster performance against the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS in 2026.
Ben Rice is great, Aaron Judge should be back, and Cody Bellinger is locked in for a while. But Paul Goldschmidt is a free agent, Giancarlo Stanton is a question mark, and both Trent Grisham and Jazz Chisholm Jr. might leave in free agency.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report is predicting that, with a need at a corner infield spot, the Yankees will go out and win the free agent sweepstakes of Japanese Triple Crown winner Teruaki Sato.
Yankees predicted to land Teruaki Sato in free agency
"The New York Yankees will sign Teruaki Sato," Rymer predicts. "... But he's also hit 79 home runs across the last two seasons in Japan. That's as a left-handed hitter, making him a classic candidate to take aim at Yankee Stadium's short porch."
Last offseason, the Yankees didn't sign Munetaka Murakami, who might've been a huge help to their offense this past season, especially when Judge missed time.
This offseason, they could look to right that wrong and sign Sato to a contract to bring in the superstar slugger who is coming off an incredible season in Japan.
In 143 games played, Sato had 165 hits, 100 runs scored, 40 doubles, three triples, 39 home runs, 106 RBIs, eight stolen bases, 68 walks, 164 strikeouts, and a .306 batting average with a .991 OPS.

Sato won the NPB Triple Crown this past season, and assuming he actually is available to sign with teams this offseason, the Yankees make a lot of sense as a landing spot.
While Sato might not be an elite defender at third base, he's still someone the Yankees could look to add in hopes of dramatically improving their offensive output next season.
Pairing him with Rice, Judge, and Luis Garcia Jr. would make for quite the group of sluggers, without even including Bellinger, George Lombard Jr., and a resurgent Anthony Volpe.
This prediction from Rymer would make a ton of sense for the Yankees. It won't be easy to sign Sato this offseason, but if the Yankees can make it work, it's the kind of upgrade that would be a no-brainer to push across the finish line.
