Yankees make Giancarlo Stanton announcement amid slugger's injury return

The New York Yankees officially added designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton to the 60-day injured list, the team announced Thursday.

Essentially a formality at this point, the Yankees needed room on the 40-man roster after they claimed outfielder Bryan De La Cruz off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.

Moving Stanton to the 60-day injured list doesn't necessarily mean one thing or another in regard to the rehab he's doing in order to return from bilateral elbow injuries. He was never expected to return before 60 days.

It's still unclear when Stanton will begin a rehab assignment. The Yankees are taking the cautious approach with their $325 million slugger, though he has progressed to taking batting practice, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

New York's offense has been surprisingly resurgent despite the loss of Juan Soto. They lead all of Major League Baseball in OPS (.829), OPS+ (135), home runs (53), batting average (.267) and total bases (506). They are also second only to the Chicago Cubs in runs scored per game (5.71).

Adding a healthy Stanton to the lineup will be a nice move for New York even if it means facing some difficult decisions with playing time considering the emergence of Ben Rice and the consistency of Paul Goldschmidt.

Either way, the Yankees are hoping to get Stanton back as soon as possible without further risking re-injury.
