The New York Yankees seem more than ready to give someone else a chance to play shortstop with Anthony Volpe out for the short-term. While Ryan McMahon has mostly played third baseman, the Yankees look open to expanding his role if needed, and it sounds like they’re more than happy to do so.
Skipper Aaron Boone’s recent comments gave more insight into how the organization is thinking.
The ability to move players around the diamond can be the difference between carrying an extra bat, arm, or anything else. For the Yankees, having guys who can play multiple positions only helps them put the best players on the field every night.
If McMahon can handle shortstop, it’d give New York more flexibility when playing this spring.
Chris Kirschner of The Athletic had the latest Boone’s stance, which suggested that the Yankees are at least considering McMahon as an option at shortstop if the needed at some point in the year.
“Aaron Boone said he would be comfortable having Ryan McMahon play shortstop if today was a regular season game, a sign at which way the Yankees are leaning when constructing their bench,” he wrote.
Boone saying that he trusts McMahon to play up the middle signals that this isn’t just a random idea he had.
If the Yankees move forward with this plan, McMahon’s role would become one of the more important parts, if not the most, in shaping the team’s infield depth heading into the season.
