Yankees make Anthony Volpe announcement after shoulder injury

The New York Yankees may have avoided a major injury.

Though not out of the woods yet, the MRI and X-ray tests came back negative on Anthony Volpe's shoulder after the shortstop endured a scary injury during Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided an update after Volpe was held out of the lineup Sunday.

"X-rays, MRI -- good news," Boone said. "He's sore today, but I feel like we're probably in a good spot. We'll see. Kind of day-to-day right now."

It seems the Yankees avoided a major injury, but even Volpe said after Saturday's game that it was a feeling he'd never had before.

The pop in the shoulder while fully extending on a dive is a scary image, especially after Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story ended his 2024 season in April after fracturing his left shoulder making an almost identical play.

"It's a little unclear in there. He's got some stuff that they feel like is older stuff, so hard to know exactly," Boone said. "He's definitely a little cranky in the shoulder today."

Volpe won't truly know how he feels until he prepares to play another game. When that will happen is unclear.

The 24-year-old shortstop and Gold Glove winner has had another strong start to the season defensively, and though he's been volatile at the plate, his 92 mph average exit velocity ranks in the 84th percentile. Volpe is slashing .233/.326/.442 with five home runs this season.

With Jazz Chisholm on the injured list, the Yankees will continue to lean on a group that consists of Pablo Reyes, Jorbit Vivas and Oswald Peraza in the middle.
