Yankees linked to offseason trade for Brewers' 'premier offensive threat'

The New York Yankees can be happy with the way Austin Wells has improved at the plate over the last few months, but they cannot be complacent. 

Statistically, Wells was on the way to one of the worst offensive seasons in Yankees history. His numbers still aren't great, but he's shown signs of life with the bat. 

This offseason, general manager Brian Cashman should at least explore the catching market for an upgrade. 

Perhaps the Milwaukee Brewers could be of great assistance. 

FanSided's Robert Murray wrote that this offseason could be the time when the Brewers look to trade All-Star backstop William Contreras. 

"This is a name to watch because Contreras is entering the final year of his contract in 2027, a point at which the Brewers have typically moved on from previous star players such as Corbin Burnes, Josh Hader, Freddy Peralta and Devin Williams," Murray wrote. 

Contreras is on pace for his fifth consecutive season with 15 or more home runs and an OPS+ of 106 or higher.

Behind the plate, he has a strong arm but does not rank highly as a pitch framer or blocker.

"The market for Contreras would be extensive. After all, he’s established himself as one of baseball's premier offensive threats behind the plate and has also improved defensively since coming to Milwaukee," Murray added.

"A team like the New York Yankees would make plenty of sense, especially after missing on catching reinforcements at the trade deadline. But they would be far from the only ones that could possibly be involved," Murray finished. 

New York's lineup would vastly improve with the addition of Contreras, but they would have plenty of competitors.
