Yankees GM Brian Cashman wasn’t surprised to see Trent Grisham accept qualifying offer

New York Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham recently accepted the $22 million qualifying offer to return to the Bronx for 2026. While to some, the move came as a surprise, the higher-ups in the Yankees’ front office weren’t so surprised.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman told Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News that he wasn’t surprised to see Grisham accept the qualifying offer, referring to it as a “50-50 decision.”

“We're happy he accepted because it's one important piece taken care of,” Cashman said.

Grisham was originally a part of the now infamous Juan Soto trade from the San Diego Padres in December 2023. After being largely a backup outfielder for the entirety of the 2024 season, playing time opened up for Grisham in 2025, and he answered with the best season of his career.

In 2025, Grisham smacked a career-high 34 home runs, and had an OPS of .811. Grisham was one of the most important pieces to a Yankees’ offense that was among baseball’s best, and now he returns for 2026.

The Yankees could see themselves with a crowded outfield situation, as they already have Aaron Judge, Jasson Dominguez, minor league star Spencer Jones, and are still expected to pursue Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker in free agency. Nonetheless, one key piece from 2025 will be back for another shot at a World Series title in 2026.
