Yankees' former Rookie of the Year given terrible grade amid struggles, injuries

The New York Yankees can thank the lucky stars for the emergence of Cam Schlittler and Gerrit Cole's return to the mound.

Otherwise, they could have been stuck with a struggling right-hander in the rotation. He was named the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2024, but injuries have hampered his progress over the last few seasons.

"[Luis] Gil didn’t make the Opening Day roster, and he lasted just four starts before the Yankees sent him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre," wrote The Athletic's Brendan Kuty. "Then he needed to be shut down with shoulder inflammation. He’s far from the pitcher who won the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year award."

A high-grade lat strain limited Gil to just 11 starts in 2025. His strikeout numbers dramatically dropped, going from 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings in 2024 to 6.5 K/9.

In 19.1 innings this season, he managed to punch out just nine of the 85 batters he faced. That's likely one of the reasons Kuty gave Gil an F grade for his contributions, or lack thereof, to the Yankees this year thus far.

There is a scenario in which Gil helps the Yankees out of the bullpen later this season. But he's done more harm than good when on the mound.

The 27-year-old must overcome the shoulder inflammation before seeking a strong bounce-back.
