The New York Yankees have some very interesting decisions to make this offseason, with the Trent Grisham, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and David Bednar decisions being the headliners.
But of those three, the one they're most likely to bring back is Bednar, especially after they placed the qualifying offer on him and didn't do so for Chisholm or Grisham.
When it comes to Bednar, however, keeping him might prove tricky. The reason is that ESPN's Kiley McDaniel is projecting that Bednar will get a "slightly better" contract than what Devin Williams got last year, a deal in which the Yankees didn't match.
David Bednar projected to get a better contract than Devin Williams did last offseason.
"11. David Bednar, RHRP... Projected contract/QO: three years, $60 million (20 AAV), received QB," McDaniel writes. "... He has a slightly better case than Devin Williams, who landed a three-year, $51 million deal with deferrals last winter, so I have Bednar a notch above that."
The Yankees' right-handed reliever is slated to earn quite a lot of money this offseason, with the Yankees already putting over $20 million on the table by extending him the qualifying offer.
But if Bednar can reach this projected contract from McDaniel, coming in at $20 million per year over three years for a total of $60 million, then he'll likely decline the qualifying offer and sign a strong deal this November.

Bednar is 32 years old, so a long-term deal beyond three years isn't likely, especially since he's a reliever. But with 143 saves over the past five seasons and a strong pitch combo with his fastball and splitter, Bednar is likely to land a strong deal this offseason.
McDaniel is predicting it'll come in better than what Williams got last offseason. The Yankees let Williams go, as he signed with the New York Mets on that $51 million deal. If the Yankees aren't willing to pay top dollar for a reliever, Bednar might be gone too.
However, with Chisholm and Grisham seemingly on their way out this offseason, re-signing Bednar might be more in play than Williams was a year ago.
