Yankees blockbuster trade idea dumps $37 million starter for multiple All-Star

The New York Yankees have had a busy offseason and may not be done yet. They could look to bring in a third baseman or potentially get rid of one of their worst contracts for a valuable arm.

Marcus Stroman's first year in New York was not what fans or the organization expected. He has one year left and a vesting option on the deal. Newsweek's Zach Pressnell proposed this trade with the St. Louis Cardinals that lands multiple All-Stars in exchange for Stroman:

  • Yankees receive: right-handed pitcher Ryan Helsley and right-handed pitcher Miles Mikolas
  • Cardinals receive: right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman and right-handed pitcher Chase Hampton

Stroman signed a two-year, $37 million deal last winter. He had a 4.31 ERA in 29 starts. He did not pitch in the postseason. The Yankees have already added Max Fried to their rotation and Devin Williams to their bullpen. They could really solidify both groups by adding Helsley and Mikolas.

Helsley is a two-time All-Star and the reigning Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year. He will be a free agent after this season. Helsley is one of the few players in the league who could give the Yankees an actual decision to make at closer. Devin Williams is also a two-time All-Star and a two-time Trevor Hoffman NL Reliever of the Year. Having both guys in the bullpen would make the Yankees nearly untouchable in close games.

Mikolas is also a two-time All-Star. He had a down year last season, but the Yankees could hope to help him reach his All-Star form again. He is in the last year of his three-year, $55 million deal. He and Stroman would be making around the same amount of money, but the Yankees would not have to worry about his vesting option kicking in while getting a potentially valuable arm in their rotation.
