Yankees All-Star slugger predicted to dump NY in favor of Mariners image

The New York Yankees are in a weird spot.

New York made it all the way to the World Series this fall and looked like one of the best teams in baseball for most of the season. The Yankees dominated at times and built a great roster. But, the team is going to look different in 2025.

Superstar slugger Juan Soto has been the most talked about free agent and certainly could be on his way out of town as there is some serious competition to land him.

He isn't the only All-Star free agent from the Yankees, though. Second baseman Gleyber Torres is available and could end up playing elsewhere in 2025. That's where the Seattle Mariners could come into play.

Seattle has one of the best rotations in baseball but needs to add offense. MLB.com's staff predicted that they will end up doing so by signing Torres.

"1. Mariners (29 percent), 2. (Detroit Tigers) (15 percent), 3. Yankees (13 percent)," MLB.com posted. "Torres has had his ups and downs over the past seven seasons with the Yankees, but it could be time for a change of scenery. The once highly touted prospect burst onto the scene in 2018, hitting 24 home runs in 123 games while earning an All-Star nod and finishing third in AL Rookie of the Year voting.

"He took a step forward in '19, hitting .278 with 38 home runs, 90 RBIs and a career-best .871 OPS. However, a 2020 move to shortstop, his natural position, coincided with a dip in production -- and put a spotlight on some of the concerns surrounding his defense. Torres' defensive struggles were again at the forefront in 2024, when those -- paired with offensive and baserunning woes -- led to him being benched twice by the eventual (American League) champion Yankees."

Torres has been a star for the Yankees but he may end up leaving this winter. Seattle is looking for offense and this predicted move would be great.
