Yankees' 20-year-old defensive wizard impressing in 2026 Spring Training

The New York Yankees have some incredible players waiting in the wings, or stuck behind great players without a clear roster spot on the MLB roster.

Spencer Jones is one such player, and he's had a great Spring Training thus far. But another position player is having as impressive a Spring this year, and it's 20-year-old George Lombard Jr.

As Bryan Hoch of MLB.com notes, Lombard has been the one prospect "making some noise" this Spring thanks to his incredible defense, a "live bat," and impressive poise.

George Lombard Jr. is impressing Yankees in 3rd Spring Training

"... Lombard has already made dazzling defensive plays in the early going, including a bare-handed pickup on a slow chopper to third base that manager Aaron Boone said would be a 'low percentage' play for most infielders," Hoch writes, "Not for Lombard, who also has displayed a live bat and maturity far beyond his birth certificate."

Lombard has been this Spring's top Yankees prospect. In five games, Lombard has a .250 batting average with a .913 OPS. But the calling card is his defense.

He's gotten some work at third base and shortstop this Spring, along with some time at second base as well. While he's behind a solid infield, he could make his MLB debut in 2026 if there's an injury or very poor play from one spot.

Hoch's point that Lombard is also showing maturity is a welcome sign. For such a young prospect, at only 20 years old, it wouldn't be a surprise if he struggled out of the gate with acclimating to the pressure of the big leagues.

While he has not made his MLB debut, his poise in Spring Training is noticeable enough that Hoch pointed it out. That's a good sign for Lombard.

Coming off a solid .748 OPS 2025 season in the minor leagues, Lombard could be making a push to the Majors soon.

He's not likely to make the Opening Day roster, but a good Spring and the beginning of his 2026 minor league season could have the young infielder on the cusp of an MLB debut.
