It's an emotional weekend for WWE fans as one of the greatest of all time, John Cena, is set to compete in his final match and end his professional wrestling career at the upcoming Saturday Night's Main Event XLII.
The Cenation Leader has been on a retirement tour this year. He has competed in multiple high-profile bouts and faced numerous superstars such as Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, AJ Styles, Dominik Mysterio, and more.
Former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther captured a massive win over LA Knight and won the Last Time is Now Tournament, becoming the rightful contender to be the Cenation Leader's final opponent at SNME.
The Ring General has already sent Goldberg into retirement, defeating him cleanly earlier this year in his retirement bout. Now he has vowed to end Cena's career in style and make him tap.
Meanwhile, WWE might have subtly confirmed that Cena will have a match at WrestleMania 42.
The company's massive tease about John Cena's match at WrestleMania
While the Cenation Leader has sealed and locked that he would not enter the ring again after his final match at SNME XLII, this all could barely be a setup for his grand retirement bout at Mania next year.
The Stamford-based promotion teased a supermatch featuring him against The Rock. The Chain Gang Soldier technically betrayed The Final Boss by turning babyface once again despite trading his soul to the Brahma Bull at Elimination Chamber 2025.
John Cena might have a trilogy at The Show of Shows
WWE, on its official site, posted a 'What If' scenario that mentioned The Rock might return after John's final match at SNME and express that he wants his soul, as he is his Final Boss; this could lead to a rubber match between two icons one final time at WWE WrestleMania 42.
By its 'what if' article, the company might have subtly confirmed that Cena could pull a shocker and compete in his final Mania bout against his greatest rival, The Final Boss.
That said, the angle proposed above is speculative, and nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
The 17-time World Champion needs a grand closer
John Cena has had a legendary career and needs a jaw-dropping closer; his retirement at SNME against The Ring General does sound like a bit of a smaller reception for an icon like him.
Therefore, his competing at The Grandest Stage of Them All against The Rock would be a box-office hit of a lifetime and would generate major success for WWE. Hence, the company could pull the trump card and shock the pro wrestling world.
