A WWE Hall of Famer has explained why John Cena gave up in his final match. The Never Seen 17 ended a 20-year streak as he tapped out to Gunther in his retirement match at Saturday Night's Main Event.

The decision to have Cena submit in his farewell match has proved to be controversial, with fans criticizing the finish. Fans online have been vocal about WWE making a guy like Cena, whose career was built on never giving up, tap out. Some have even called it him giving up on his fans, especially the young kids.

However, WWE Hall of Famer and tag team legend Bully Ray has defended the finish of the match. Speaking on the Busted Open Podcast, Ray explained how The Champ tapping out in his final match doesn't mean he gave up on his fans and wrestling.

"John Cena did not give up on wrestling fans. John Cena gave up for wrestling fans so wrestling fans could have good stories in the future. He didn't give up because he was a punk a**. He didn't give up because he was weak. He didn't give up for those reasons; that John Cena would have just passed out. He gave up to pass on," he said.

Ray said that everything and everybody has an expiration date. He mentioned Cena knew his time was up, but it doesn't mean he turned his back on his fans.

"John didn't give up on Make-A-Wish kids. John didn't give up on children. John did not give up on one fan out there. He gave up for fans out there. He gave up for you so you can enjoy the stories moving forward," he said.
