In a shocking development, Shubman Gill was dropped from India's squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The 15-member squad was announced on Saturday, December 20, after the conclusion of the South Africa series.
Gill was the vice-captain of the T20I side. However, he has been sacked from the role and dropped as well. Axar Patel was announced vice-captain of the team. Gill had returned to the T20I team during the Asia Cup 2025 and was right away appointed as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy.
However, his form has not been great ever since. Consistent failures could have led to the big decision made by the Indian team close to the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Shubman Gill's inconsistent performances since his return to T20Is
Shubman Gill made his T20I debut in 2023 against Sri Lanka. He last played against Sri Lanka in 2024 but was not part of the T20 World Cup that year. After being away from the T20I side for a while, he returned during the Asia Cup 2025.
However, his form has remained inconsistent since his return. In the Asia Cup, he scored 127 runs from seven matches at an average of 21.16 and a strike rate of 151.19. In the Australia series following the Asia Cup, he failed to make much impact. He scored 132 runs from five games at an average of 44 and a strike rate of 136.08.
In the recently concluded series against South Africa, Gill made just 32 runs from three matches at an average of 10.66 and a strike rate of 103.22.
