2 hours ago 3

With the 2026 World Cup well into play now, it's never too early to look ahead to the knockout stages.

Co-hosts Mexico and the United States were the first two teams to lock in positions in the Round of 32, and more teams will join them in the future. After that, the world's best will continue to fill out that stage and future knockout rounds at the latest edition of the World Cup.

Once the knockout stages begin, each match can be a country's last, so anything can happen. While the group stages feature a format of each team playing each other, a country has one game per round of the knockout stages. A win means they move onto the following stage, and a loss means a flight home and the end of their 2026 World Cup campaign.

Here's a live look at how the knockout stages have shaped up thus far for the 2026 World Cup.

MORE: Updated World Cup third place standings

Mexico

After being one of the teams to win their first two games of the 2026, Mexico has already clinched a prime spot in the knockout stages. With their win over South Korea, the second-place team in Group A, Mexico has already clinched the top seed in their group. In the Round of 32, they will take on a third-place team that qualifies from Group C, E, F, H, or I.

United States

The USMNT also punched their ticket into the Round of 32, and won Group D — the third time ever finishing first in the group stage and first since 2010. The U.S. will play their Round of 32 match on July 1 against a third-place opponent from either Group B, E, F, I, or J.

Germany

Germany became the first team outside of North America to qualify for the Round of 32. After a thrilling come-from-behind 2-1 win against the Ivory Coast on Saturday, Germany officially won Group E. With the top spot, Nationalelf will play the third-place opponent from either Group A, B, C, D, or F.

Argentina

Lionel Messi's squad clinched a place in the Round of 32 with a win over Austria on June 22. The match saw Messi scored a pair of goals and become the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history in the process. Argentina clinched first place in the group after Algeria beat Jordan.

France

Kylian Mbappe scored a pair of goals as France qualified for the knockout stage with a 3-0 win over Iraq. The French can clinch the group if they avoid defeat to Norway on the final matchday of the group stage. Either way, Mbappe and company will be a force in the knockout stage of the tournament.

Norway

Erling Haaland scored two more goals as Norway battled past Senegal 3-2 at a weather-delayed match at MetLife Stadium. The result ensured the Scandinavians will go through along with France, with the winners of the group to be determined when the top two meet on June 26 in Boston.

Colombia

Luis Diaz's second-half goal carried the Colombians past a frisky DR Congo squad and into the knockout stage of the tournament. Colombia's defense withstood a late barrage of attacks from Congo and narrowly escaped with three important points. Nestor Lorenzo's squad will be a dark horse candidate to make a deep run.

Switzerland

The Swiss spoiled Canada's hopes to stay on home soil in the Round of 32 with a 2-1 win over Les Rouges to clinch first place in Group B. Switzerland will now benefit from a favorable third-place opponent on July 2 in Vancouver.

Canada

The Canadians clinched a spot in the knockouts despite a loss to the Swiss, but will now face a more difficult path after seeing first place slip away. Instead of staying in Vancouver on a weeks' rest, Les Rouges will travel to Los Angeles to face the second-place finisher from Group A (likely South Korea or Czechia) on Sunday.

Brazil

Brazil rounded into form in its final two group-stage matches and blew out Scotland to clinch first place in the group. The slow start in the opener now appears to be in the rearview mirror.

Morocco

Morocco survived a battle with Haiti that featured some tense moments to pick up three points and clinch second place in the group. Despite rocky group stage, the Moroccans will be present in the Round of 32.

South Africa

South Africa pulled off a 1-0 upset over South Korea to qualify for the knockout stage as the Group A runner-up. The South Africans advanced to the Round of 32 despite finishing the group stage with a negitive goal differential. They will play Canada in the knockout rounds

Ivory Coast
The Ivory Coast wrapped up second place in Group E after cruising to a 2-0 win over Curaçao on Match Day 3. The side is a loaded one that could make noise in the knockout rounds.

Ecuador

Ecuador qualified in dramatic fashion, with a late game-winner over Germany that rescued its tournament and sent it into the Round of 32. The side entered the tournament as a dark horse contender, but its group-stage campaign was uneven. Ecuador now has a chance to rediscover their form and prove it belongs among the tournament's most dangerous knockout teams.

Netherlands

After a slight hiccup in theior first game, the Netherlands has looked near dominant in the  as of late. The Orange Army will roll into the knockout rounds as the Group F winner and looks like a threat to make a deep run.

Japan

Japan has played a clinical style of soccer in this tournament and looked like a threat to win Group F until the very end. As it turned out, they qualified as the second-place team following a 1-1 draw with Sweden. They have drawn Brazil in what will be an interesting Round of 32 matchup.

Sweden

Sweden qualified for the knockout rounds by virtue of a Matchday 3 draw with Japan. The Swedes have not looked very imposing for most stretches thus far, but the squad, led by Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres, has been granted new life.

How does the World Cup bracket work?

The Round of 32 is the start of what is commonly referred to as the knockout rounds because every match is single elimination from here on out.

There are no points earned. There are no standings. There's simply a winner and a loser.

What happens if knockout matches finish tied?

There has to be a winner on the day for each Round of 32 match and for subsequent knockout-round matches (Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place match, final). So if teams are tied after 90 minutes of regulation, the match goes into a 30-minute period of extra time.

If the deadlock persists after those 30 minutes of extra time, then a penalty shootout will determine the team that moves on to the quarterfinals.

The Round of 32 pairings are set in advance. Teams that finish in first place in the group stage match up against teams that are runners-up in their respective groups.

How third place qualifiers work

All 12 third-place finishers are sorted into a table just like the groups based on their points gained in group stage play and other metrics such as goal differential.

The top eight teams in this table will advance to the knockout round.

Knockout stage tiebreakers for 2026 World Cup

If teams are tied on points in their group, which comes through three for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss, the following tiebreakers are enacted to determine final standingsin accordance with the official 2026 World Cup rules (page 26):

  1. Head-to-head points: most points in group matches when the teams tied in the standings went against each other.
  2. Head-to-head goal difference: the highest margin of goals scored/against in group matches when the teams tied in the standings went against each other.
  3. Head-to-head goals scored: most goals in group matches when the teams tied in the standings went against each other.
  4. Overall goal differential: whichever team has the higher margin between how many goals they score and allow.
  5. Total goals scored: whichever team scores the most goals in the group stage.
  6. Highest team conduct score: a score that is diminished as team players/personnel get carded.
  7. Higher FIFA/Coca‑Cola Men’s World Ranking: the team with the higher international team rank will move on. If the teams somehow have the same ranking, the most recent past edition of the rankings will be examined.
