The Buffalo Bills are interested in Philip Rivers for their head-coach vacancy.
That was confirmed on Friday, when ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Bills would meet with the retired former Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback.
There have been rumblings since the end of the season that Rivers could get a look at job openings in the NFL, so it's not entirely shocking to see him garnering interest from the Bills.
When asked about the possibility of becoming a head coach in the NFL at some point, Rivers said he believes he has what it takes, despite not having any coaching experience at the NFL level.
He also noted that, while he would like to get back to his family, he would not "shut down" the opportunity to be a head coach.
“Those are all big ‘What ifs,’ but I do think, as humbly as I can say it, that I can coach at this level,” Rivers said after the season. “I know enough about the game, about the guys from a leadership standpoint, camaraderie — all that comes with it.”
“I’m looking forward to going back home and getting back with those guys, getting back with my family,” he said. “Gunner’s senior season (is) coming up, and we’ve been to back-to-back semifinals, and hopefully we can get over the hump this year. So, I don’t have any of those (NFL) things on my radar, but certainly nothing that I would shut down before it even became a possibility.”
While the Bills hiring Rivers sounds silly, we wouldn't completely rule it out.
Quarterback Josh Allen, who is going to play a significant part in who the Bills hire as their next head coach, has the highest opinion possible of Rivers.
"Philip's one of the greatest to ever play the game," he said. "He's an unbelievable football player, smart as any quarterback to play in this league and we'll see how it works out. I'm rooting for him because, again, another great human being."
Do we think Rivers is likely to get the Bills' job? No.
Do we think it's impossible? No, also.
