It's official: Woodrow Wilson of Long Beach is back on top of the Moore League.
After trailing 14-6 at halftime in Week Eight, the Bruins upset Long Beach Poly 22-21 for their first win over their rival since 1991. That was also the last time they won the conference, and with their 49-12 rout of Jordan (Long Beach) in Week Nine, they clinched at least a share of the Moore League title as well.
Wilson recorded 10 tackles for loss, five sacks, and two forced fumbles in their win against Poly, spearheaded by three TFLs, two sacks, and a forced fumble by Zackariah Salcedo. Down 21-14, Wilson scored the only touchdown of the fourth quarter with about a minute left on a Jemel Grigsby run, and QB Mack Cooper hit Brooklyn Vega for the do-or-die two-point conversion. The Bruins' other scores came on a touchdown from Cooper to Thomas Jones, a rushing two-point conversion by Branden Cruz, and a kickoff return touchdown by Kyle Harris.
For its banner win and banner year, Wilson has been voted The Sporting News California Team of the Week for Week Eight. Now standing 8-1 (5-0), it looks to complete the sweep of the Moore League on Friday as the favorite at Lakewood (6-3, 4-1).
