Kenshiro Teraji was aiming to bounce back from defeat and become a three-weight world champion against IBF super flyweight ruler Willibaldo Garcia.

However, Garcia (23-6-2, 13 KOs) was taken ill after both boxers made weight at Friday's weigh-in.

After the fighter was examined at hospital, he was declared medically unfit to fight.

A statement issued by promoter Matchroom Boxing read: “Willibaldo Garcia’s IBF world super flyweight title fight against Kenshiro Teraji has been cancelled.

“Garcia fell ill following today’s ceremonial weigh-in and was subsequently admitted to hospital. After medical evaluation, Garcia has been declared unfit to fight by the local boxing commission.”

Garcia vs. Teraji was set to be part of the Ring V: Night of the Samurai card, which is topped by undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue and features Junto Nakatani as chief support.

The plan is for Inoue and Nakatani to face one another in an all-Japanese superfight in 2026, but Teraji (25-2, 16 KOs) also stands up as a superstar in his own right within a golden era for boxing in the country.

'The Amazing Boy' unified the flyweight division with a sensational final-round knockout of Seigo Yuri Akui in March, only to lose the WBC and WBA belts to Ricardo Sandoval via split decision in July.

It remains to be seen if the bout with Garcia can be rescheduled for the new year. The champion could risk being stripped by the famously stringent IBF if he goes ahead with the contest. Garcia vs. Teraji was planned as a voluntary defence and Garcia has a pending mandatory obligation against Australia's Andrew Moloney.

Teraji could still face a late replacement opponent on the Inoue vs. Picasso undercard, with Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh touting novice pros Moussa Mouhoub (3-1, 1 KO) and Murtda Ziemalabden (1-0, 1 KO) over social media on Friday night.
