Who’s to blame? Who’s to say!

If you’ve already binged all six episodes of Prime Video‘s latest thriller, The Girlfriend, you know that Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke are two women on a mission to win the heart of a man they both care deeply for… in different capacities, that is.

**Spoilers ahead for Season 1 of The Girlfriend, now streaming on Prime Video**

Quickly after pressing play on Episode 1, we learn that Cherry (Cooke) and Laura (Wright) are the girlfriend and mother, respectively, of Daniel (Laurie Davidson), a hot and rich doctor looking to settle down, much to the happiness of both characters. That joy is soon dashed, however, as Laura begins to suspect Cherry is not who she says, and Cherry believes Laura is all-too-content to interfere in her son’s love life. Throughout the six episodes, the ladies battle it out (sometimes physically) until one emerges as the clear victor who captures Daniel’s entire heart. But are we supposed to believe that it’s just over after that? We think not!

Keep reading to find out everything we know about Season 2 of The Girlfriend, including if it’s happening and what it could look like after that cliffhanger ending.

Is The Girlfriend Season 2 Happening at Prime Video?

As of September 13, three days after the release of Season 1 of The Girlfriend, Prime Video has not announced or confirmed a second season of The Girlfriend. It’s unclear if there are any plans in place to make another season, although it does appear that Prime is marketing it as a limited series so a Season 2 is certainly not expected.

How Does Season 1 of The Girlfriend End?

The main reason we don’t predict a second season of The Girlfriend is that Season 1 ends with the tragic and shocking death of Laura, not at the hands of Cherry, but rather by Daniel. In the Season 1 finale, Daniel — who is under the influence of drugs after his mom slipped medication into his drink — attempts to rescue Cherry from Laura but ends up holding Laura underwater to too long. The series then skips ahead to Daniel and Cherry in the future, enjoying life and a married couple with a baby on the way.

The perfect picture is shattered, though, when Daniel discovers Laura’s phone, complete with a message to him about Cherry’s history of violence and aggression, straight from the mouth of Cherry’s own mom. As for what he does after that, it’s up to your imagination as the season ends with Daniel looking out at a very pregnant Cherry in the garden.

What Could Season 2 of The Girlfriend Look Like?

Should Prime Video decide to green-light a second season of The Girlfriend, it will almost certainly involve Daniel doing everything he can to separate himself from Cherry after discovering that his mother may not have been overexaggerating her claims about his now-wife. Could it end up with Daniel having a second skeleton in his closet? It’s certainly something we would love to see.

When Could Season 2 of The Girlfriend Release on Prime Video?

Since Prime Video has yet to renew the series and it is being called a limited series, a timeline on when it could come out is rough to estimate. Although Prime is typically able to produce a new season in one to two years so fingers crossed that we wouldn’t have to wait beyond late 2027 for more of Cherry’s shenanigans.
