Jets’ mission to build off explosive Week 1 in massive Bills test

Now, what can you do for an encore?

That is the question for quarterback Justin Fields and the rest of the Jets offense as they face the Bills on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

They put up 394 yards of total offense in a Week 1 loss to the Steelers.

Fields played very well in his Jets debut, both running and passing the ball with efficiency.

But now they need to show consistency, and it comes against the Bills, who have been the kings of the AFC East for six seasons now.

“Is it tough to follow that? I mean, I guess so,” Fields said. “I don’t really know how to answer that. You just want to keep improving. I think Harrison [Phillips, defensive tackle] said it in his interview, he was talking to me and his mindset on it, we’re kind of hoping that was the worst game that we’ve played all season. So, that’s the kind of mindset we want to have, and we want to continue to get better, continue to be better each and every game, and just continue to improve. I think this past Sunday was definitely a good way to start up the season, other than the loss.”

Fields was a force in the 34-32 defeat.

He quieted the doubters by completing 16 of 22 passing for 218 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 48 yards and two more touchdowns.

Fields looked poised, decisive and confident operating coordinator Tanner Engstrand’s offense for the first time.

“Well, that’s always been the plan, to let him play quarterback, and whatever the game plan consists of he’s going to go out there and he’s going to operate as best he can,” coach Aaron Glenn said. “I’ve said that from the very beginning that we’re going to let him play quarterback, and we’re going to see the things that he likes. And we’re also going to progress with the things he’s not good at, so he can get better in that aspect. So, this is still a work in progress, and we’re going to continue to work with him, and I know just because of the type of person that he is and how he’s always been, he’s going to do everything he can to perfect that. Again, I look forward to seeing him, how he matures through the season.”
