Will the Finalissima go ahead in Qatar? March soccer game cancelled as country suspends all sport after Iran strikes

1 hour ago 3

Recreated in 2022 to pit the Copa America and Euro champions against one another in a winner-take-all match, the Finalissima has gained rapid notoriety as one of the most coveted trophies in international football.

Contested by the champions of those federations considered the most dominant, the trophy is currently held by Argentina, who won the competition in 2022 by defeating Italy, foreshadowing their eventual victory later that year in the FIFA World Cup.

The Albiceleste were hoping to defend that title after winning the latest Copa America crown, against reigning European champions Spain. The game was due to be held in March in Qatar.

Unfortunately, geopolitical turmoil has threatened the viability of that match after military action in the Middle East, initially by the United States and Israel.

Why has Qatar suspended all sport?

On March 1, Qatar announced that all sporting events in the country have been suspended until further notice. This included football, with the Qatar Football Association (QFA) indicating that "the QFA will announce the resumption of the championships on a later date."

The announcement came following an Iranian missile and drone strike on Doha, which was reportedly intercepted by Qatar air defenses, although debris is said to have injured 16 individuals in the city.

Iran's retaliatory strike came shortly after "massive" U.S. and Israeli military action in Tehran, which led to the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as confirmed by Iranian state media.

U.S. president Donald Trump has described the ongoing USA-led engagement as "major combat operations".

Will the Finalissima go ahead?

With the Finalissima not scheduled to take place until March 27 organisers were left with a tight timescale to work within. On Sunday, March 15, UEFA announced the game had been cancelled because the Argentinian FA had not agreed to alternative proposals that included switching the match to Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, either as a one-off match or a two-legged tie.

"With strong determination to save the important fixture, and despite the understandable difficulties of relocating a match of such importance at extremely short notice, UEFA explored other feasible alternatives but each ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentinian Football Association," a UEFA statement read.

"The first option was to stage the match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid on the original date with a 50:50 split of supporters in the stadium. This would have provided a world class setting, befitting of prestigious event, but Argentina refused.

"The second was to stage the Finalissima over two legs - one at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 27 and the other in Buenos Aires during an international window before UEFA EURO and Copa America 2028, again offering a supporter split of 50:50 for the match in Madrid. This option was also rejected.

"Ultimately, UEFA sought a commitment from Argentina that, if a neutral venue in Europe could be found, the game could go ahead on March 27, as planned ... or on the alternative date of March 30. This proposal was also rejected. Argentina made a counter suggestion to play the game after the World Cup but, as Spain has no available dates, that option had to be ruled out.

Finally, and contrary to the original agreed plan that the match would take place on March 27, Argentina declared its availability to play exclusively on March 31, a date which proved to be unworkable.

"As a result, and to UEFA's regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled."

March international games scheduled in Qatar

The Finalissima was set to headline the Qatar Football Festival 2026.

As part of the event, multiple international matches are due to be held in Qatar around the Finalissima. Even though there is still time for the ban on sporting events to be lifted, it feels likely that the below slate of scheduled international will be ditched.
