Manchester United have been mired in a brutal run of form to begin the 2026/27 season, and the discord caused by such a poor stretch is beginning to boil over into the public.
After defeat to Atletico Madrid on the road in Champions League play, defender Lisandro Martinez let his frustrations out in front of a microphone, as the Argentine unloaded on the club's hierarchy for the squad makeup. He took particular aim at technical director Jason Wilcox for a lack of spending over this past summer.
Martinez's comments were both inflammatory and unprecedented, and whether or not fans agree or disagree with the crux of his argument, the direct nature of his attack was itself decisive.
A result of his outspoken comments could be an internal punishment, as he could be sanctioned both financially and competitively in the immediate future.

Will Lisandro Martinez be punished for Man United comments?
According to The Athletic's Man United journalist Laurie Whitwell, there is a high likelihood that Lisandro Martinez will be disciplined for his comments in some manner.
The most likely course of action is a fine, which Whitwell said is "inevitable."
Whitwell also reported that his sources indicated it's unlikely that Martinez will be in the starting lineup next game, since it would be "implausible" for him to start at the same ground that Ruben Amorim's inflammatory press conference last year led to his subsequent dismissal.
According to Whitwell, "there are players in the dressing room who feel the same as Martinez over Wilcox and the club's approach" meaning that coming down too hard on the Argentine could fracture the squad and create further discord.

What games could Lisandro Martinez miss?
Manchester United's next game is against Leeds United on October 18. If Lisandro Martinez were to be suspended for any game, that's likely the one.
It's hard to imagine him being disciplined any longer than that, but if he does, there is a Champions League game on the road at Como the following Wednesday, plus a weekend matchup against Bournemouth on October 25.
