The Detroit Lions have arguably the best one-two punch at running back in the NFL with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.
While it would be a nightmare for defenses to see both on the field at the same time, we haven't seen the Lions do it much, if at all, over the past two years.
But with Gibbs recently saying he has been "split out wide like way more" in practice this offseason, we might be seeing the pair take the field together a lot more in 2025 if those practice reps come to fruition in games.
New Lions offensive coordinator John Morton was asked about having the pair on the field at the same time. It definitely sounds like he's going to do it.
"I’m all about making the defense uneasy. I’m always looking to put our best players on the field at all times," Morton explained. "I come from the school of multiple packages of personnel groupings in and out of the huddle and trying to keep the defense uneasy. That’s the school I come from. It’s going to be a cool thing.”
Along with having Montgomery in the backfield and Gibbs split out like a wide receiver, Morton could also opt to have both in the backfield at the same time.
Montgomery and Gibbs fantastic complements to one another.
Gibbs is the faster, more electric back who can catch passes out of the backfield and take the rock to the house from anywhere on the field. Montgomery, on the other hand, is a power back who defenders don't want to meet in the hole.
Having both on the field at the same time will certainly give Morton the options he's looking for. Here's to hoping we see more of Sonic and Knuckles together in 2025.
