The Detroit Lions have reportedly hired a new offensive coordinator, but does that mean head coach Dan Campbell will give up play-calling duties?
The new offensive coordinator in Detroit is former Arizona Cardinals play-caller Drew Petzing, who became available after the team fired head coach Jonathan Gannon following the 2025 campaign.
Campbell took over play-calling duties from former offensive coordinator John Morton during the season, but it wasn't clear if he keep calling plays in 2026.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that Campbell is expected to give up play-calling duties to Petzing in 2026.
"This should be a playcalling job for new Lions OC Drew Petzing," he reported. "The expectation during OC interviews is that Dan Campbell would relinquish playcalling for the new guy."
Petzing did a decent job with the Cardinals, with Arizona sporting the No. 4 and No. 7 rushing attacks in the NFL in 2023 and 2024, respectively, and the No. 7 passing attack in 2025 despite Jacoby Brissett starting in 12 games.
One could certainly argue that Petzing got more out of Brissett than any of his previous coaches, which is an impressive feat in and of itself.
Petzing enters his new role with the Lions with a ton of pressure, just like Morton had in 2025.
He's taking over an elite offense and the expectations are going to be very high, even in Petzing's first season calling plays.
Any drop off in the unit is going to draw plenty of ire from Lions fans at Petzing, and it could lead to another one-and-done offensive coordinator in Detroit.
